ISP? Boeing Aims To Be A High-SP

Taking off into the nascent business of in-flight Internet access, Boeing Co. wants to corner 10% of the market--and an anticipated $4.5 billion in revenue--by 2010.

The prediction--which Scott Carson, president of Boeing's Connexion division, characterized as conservative--is based on 1.5 billion airline passengers paying $10 an hour to link their laptops with land. Initially, the company noted, it will charge "less than $30, but more than $10, an hour."

Connexion, which isn't the first in this market, expects to have just two or three competitors. The biggest so far, Tenzing Communications Inc., already has signed contracts with Singapore Airlines and Virgin Atlantic Airways Ltd.

Carson says Connexion hopes to announce its first customers by the end of June, and be profitable in five years.
