Intel Set to Unveil New Pentiums

New details are emerging about Intel's forthcoming Pentiumchips based on the company's .18 micron manufacturing process, dubbed Coppermine.

At the Intel launch event Monday, sources familiar with the company's plans say it will unveil .18 micron Pentium III chips ranging in speeds from 600 MHz at the low end to 733 MHz at the high end, faster than previously reported. While speedier than predecessors manufactured using Intel's .25 micron technology, what will primarily distinguish the new Pentiums is their onboard L2 cache, a first for the line. On Monday, Intel will also unveil a mobile Pentium III chip. A host of hardware vendors are expected to announce new products next week--from servers to desktop PCs and mobile devices-- based on the new Pentiums.

Intel next week also will take the wraps off its new 840 chipset, a workstation-specific product that features greater internal bandwidth than the company's 820 chipset, making it better suited for graphics processing applications.
