In Short: Wi-Fi Rides The Rails
One of America's most wired regions will soon see the benefits of casting off cables and cords. Train commuters in Silicon Valley will be able to connect wirelessly to the Internet via Wi-Fi-enabled notebooks and handheld computers as a result of a partnership between rail operator Altamont Commuter Express and PointShot Wireless. The service, which will be launched in the middle of the month, will be free to all users during a three-month trial period. Trains on Altamont lines will stay connected to the Internet via a satellite uplink, and users will connect via Wi-Fi access points on each car.
