ICS To Bring Business Intelligence To The Warehouse

The product takes analytics to the warehouse, focusing on worker productivity, movement of goods, and job scheduling.

ICS plans to offer in mid-April a business intelligence module for its data-gathering system for warehouses.

The Warehouse Intelligence Module, based on technology licensed from Q4bis, would bolt on to ICS's RF-Smart data collection software. RF-Smart gathers warehouse data from mobile devices carried by workers and from radio-frequency identification tags placed on palettes or boxes.

RF-Smart runs on Microsoft SQL Server 2005 and works in conjunction with Oracle's JD Edwards and Microsoft's Dynamicx AX enterprise resource planning systems. With the new module, RF-Smart would feed data to Q4Bis' OLAP engine for analysis, displaying results through the ERP systems.

Business intelligence tools are typically used to analyze sales and financial data. The ICS product, however, takes analytics to the warehouse, focusing on worker productivity, movement of goods, and job scheduling.

On worker performance, a warehouse manager can identify employees who are most, or least, productive, the type of work each is performing, and how efficiently they do their jobs. Managers also can monitor the speed at which goods are moving out of the warehouse and estimate future workloads, which helps in determining the number of workers needed on a particular day. "You can read out [workloads] for as far in the future as you have valid data," Matt Stueck, director of research and development at ICS, said in an interview.

The RF-Smart Warehouse Intelligence Module is currently in beta. Pricing wasn't disclosed. ICS also sells the Logimax warehouse management system.
