IBM Global Services and Lucent Technologies Inc. today revealed an initiative designed to help service providers more quickly and efficiently deliver combinations of high-speed networking and data-center services and applications.
Lucent has developed a blueprint that defines the network and data-center components required to deliver server and storage capabilities to application service providers, Internet service providers, and Web hosts. IBM Global Services will manage data-center operations.
Lucent and its partners it will create, staff, and equip four interoperability labs where service providers will be able to test and validate the blueprint. The first lab will be in New Jersey, the others in Asia and Europe.
Peter Bernstein, president of Infonautics Consulting, says one of the biggest challenges for Internet carriers is making sure that they have the security, reliability, and performance to allow their enterprise customers to outsource mission-critical applications without fear or hesitation.
