IBM Formalizes Deep Computing Push

IBM, eyeing the next stage of development in E-business, plans to introduce its Deep Computing Institute today. The institute, which will research supercomputer applications and technologies, will be funded with $29 million for its first year, and initially be staffed by 120 IBM scientists and technologists.

IBM says deep computing, combined with pervasive or ubiquitous computing devices, will shape the next stage of E-business, where new business models will arise because of the new technologies, according to William Pulleyblank, director of the institute and director of the mathematical sciences department at IBM. Deep computing can, for example, rapidly analyze data generated constantly by customers using handheld computers to order groceries, as is now being done in a pilot at Safeway, a grocer in the United Kingdom.

In addition, IBM is expected to announce that the institute is making the source code for IBM's Visualization Data Explorer available to developers on its Web site.
