HP Enhances TopTools Software

Hewlett-Packard today unveiled a new version of its TopTools device-management software that adds new administration features the company says will lower total cost of ownership as it extends its support to include hardware types.

The Web-based management tool now comes with a device manager that administrators can use to install HP TopTools and HP LaserJet printer drivers on all PCs from a central location. HP is also including a Windows 2000 hardware migration program that analyzes each desktop or notebook for its upgrade readiness. TopTools looks at the hardware and software on the PC, alerting systems administrators as to whether the computer is ready for the update and, if it isn't, what changes it needs. HP is also adding dynamic device inventories to track removable devices that are swapped in and out of notebooks. TopTools now supports HP NetVectra Windows terminals, network-attached storage devices, and HP 9000 enterprise servers. The latest version of TopTools will be available on the Web starting Sept. 15. The software is free.
