How The Dot-Com Worm Has Turned

Can't you just hear Frank Sinatra singing "That's Life" for all the dot-com people? There's a new litmus test being used by housing-rental agents for new arrivals to Silicon Valley: "Are you working for a dot-com?" If your answer is yes, then their answer could be no.

The thought seems to be that if the job goes away, so will the tenant---with the rent in arrears, no less.

We don't know if this is a permanent change for the Valley, but we do know it's a sea change over 18 months ago. Then, nearly everyone---at least the 20- and 30-somethings who are more likely to be renting than buying--bragged about their dot-com affiliation, and housing developers were scrambling to put in amenities such as T1 lines to attract them.
