re: Medication Alert Fatigue Is Curable
I couldn't agree more that physicians are having medication alert fatigue. Turning off medication alerts is one of the most common requests we get. At least with Meaningful Use requiring them, IT has some backing when denying the requests. However, these alerts absolutely need to be more useful and better targeted. When a physician gets an alert that prescribing Advair is a contraindication for asthma, one has to wonder the usefulness of these. Unfortunately since so many are useless, they blow through the important ones.
I think it'd be really quite fantastic to have these alerts tied into lab result values. In practicality though, a lab result from one lab vs another one can have quite different formatting and there's no great way to match all of the results very easily. Until we have strong, strict lab standards around results and a standardized set of ordering & results codes, it'll be a nightmare for IT to try to implement.
