re: ONC Continues Debate On Patient Safety Plan
This article hits the nail on the head when it describes the benefits that can result from giving a patient electronic access to their health information and the tools to use it. Patients that take an active approach to their healthcare will provide better outcomes. By making patient health records readily accessible you can also manage workarounds from the lack of interoperability between providers. The patient would have access to their records and will therefore be able to provide any new provider with the information needed. As is stated, though, there is still a small amount of patients that actually asked for their information in an electronic format. This is because there is still a misconception that information transmitted electronically is less secure. We need to educate patients and make them feel safe requesting their information electronically.
