NASA experimented with establishing cloud, now benefits
Ironic that so much of NASA ends up in the Amazon cloud when it was the NASA Ames Research Center that was one of the originators of commercial cloud services. It built a portable data center out of containerized compute power. OpenStack, of course, comes in part out of NASA's Nebula experiment. But open source code is not free, and NASA is not set up primarily as an open source incubation laboratory. The inevitable budget constraints took over during the recesskion and NASA staffers moved on to other things, or moved out, as Chris Kemp did, into the world of cloud hardware and software.
