Game Plan

Five pointers to help guide your Vista rollout

1
Upgrade mobile workers first, followed by analysts who work with lots of structured data. Then do the rest of your PCs as they come up for replacement.

2
Be prepared to spend $100 to $200 per PC,
excluding the Windows license, to cover migration costs.

3
Use a brand-name software distribution product to track the apps that users are entitled to and install them remotely.

4
Sign up for Microsoft's beta program to start seeing how Vista performs in your shop; a feature-complete beta release is due this spring.

5
Aim to run Vista only on new PCs with at least 512 Mbytes of RAM. Install Vista on older machines only if you can do it for less than $100.
