For SCO, What Goes Around...



Caldera International said last week it's changing its name to the SCO Group and updating the Santa Cruz Operation's flagship UnixWare product a year after SCO sold most of its products to Caldera. These changes came as Caldera (now SCO Group) reported a net loss of $4.5 million on sales of $15.4 million. The moves revive a brand name once left for dead and demonstrate the tough market facing companies such as Caldera that are trying to earn a living from Linux.

In 1995, Novell sold UnixWare--a Unix-on-Intel variant--to the original SCO, where it and less-expensive OpenServer Unix flourished. But SCO wasn't able to compete with larger Unix-on-RISC vendors such as Sun Microsystems. Meanwhile, a group of Novell staffers founded Caldera in 1994 to sell Linux tools and support. Caldera completed its UnixWare and OpenServer acquisition last year.

SCO Group plans to update UnixWare in December and OpenServer early next year. A new version of its Linux distribution, SCO Linux, enters a general beta test this month.
