FCC Will Include Large Businesses In Spectrum Auction

The FCC has reconsidered its plan to auction portions of the C and F blocks of the Personal Communications Service wireless spectrum to smaller businesses only, thereby giving larger wireless providers a chance to license a larger portion of the spectrum for their use.

An auction, set to take place in November, was previously limited to companies that have had gross revenue of less than $125 million in each of the last two years and have total assets of less than $500 million. The FCC decided to allow larger companies bidding rights after it received several formal requests for access and felt it was in the "public good," according to a statement issued by the agency. The FCC was also slated to auction the C block in 30-MHz licenses, but will now split those 30-MHz blocks into three 10-MHz blocks and will not limit the number of licenses a single purchaser can buy in the auction.
