Digital Camera Revenues To Hit $6.8 Billion This Year

Revenues from digital cameras are expected to increase to $6.8 billion this year, as prices stabilize for the next five years, a market research firm said Monday.

Revenues are expected to be 18 percent higher than last year, while shipments are forecast to rise by 17 percent this year to 29.5 million units, The NPD Group said.

Point-and-shoot cameras, which accounted for 73 percent of the market last year, is expected to reach $5 billion this year, an 8 percent increase over last year. The easy-to-use cameras are expected to account for 95 percent of shipments, exceeding 27 million units in 2006 for a 16 percent increase over 2005.

The market next year, however, is expected to peak and begin to slow down. While low-end cameras are forecast to represent more than 70 percent of revenue through 2008, that number is expected to dip below 70 percent in 2009 and 2010, NPD said. Unit sales are expected to account for 90 percent of the total market through 2009, dipping below that percentage in 2010,

The average selling price for point-and-click cameras is expected to drop this year to $182, a 7 percent decline from 2005. Prices are expected to fluctuate within only $5 through 2010.

Higher end digital single lens reflex cameras are forecast to show a 33.6 percent increase in revenue and an 11 percent rise in shipments by 2010, the researcher said. This year, sales are forecast to reach $1.7 billion, a 7 percent increase over 2005. Unit sales, on the other hand, should reach 1.8 million, a 54 percent surge from last year.

The ASP is expected to drop more than 30 percent this year to $942, and continue its fall through 2010 to about $737.

"The notion that the digital imaging market is losing ground just isn't accurate," NPD analyst Stephen Baker said in a statement. "Overall, the short-term outlook is very good, and while the long-term outlook shows declines in sales, there is still great potential for the market."
