Catalyst 9.3 includes compliance with Windows Display Driver Model 1.1, bringing developers a number of graphics-related benefits in testing and updating applications using the Windows 7 beta release. Catalyst graphics and video configuration software is used to control application performance and visual quality on AMD's ATI Radeon processors.

"We are ready for Windows 7," Ben Bar-Haim, corporate VP of software engineering in AMD's Graphics Products Group, said in a statement.

The latest version of Catalyst enables developers to fully utilize the DirectX 10.1 application programming interface in Windows 7 beta. The API provides access to Microsoft Aero, the graphical user interface and the default theme in Windows, starting with Vista. DirectX 10.1 is supported in ATI Radeon HD 3000 and HD 4000 series products.

By using Catalyst in combination with the Radeon processors, developers can improve a number of application features, from ClearType text rendering to hardware-accelerated vector graphics, AMD said. In addition, developers can improve playback of multimedia, including high-definition video on compatible screens, and boost 3-D game performance.

AMD competitor Nvidia is also getting its products ready for Windows 7, which is expected by early next year. Nvidia said last month its Ion graphics platform for mini-laptops can run HD video on top of the upcoming OS. Microsoft recently certified Ion for running the Home Premium version of Vista on mini-laptops and mini-desktops.
