Sentiment analysis is one of my favorite topics: one of the most challenging and one of the most interesting uses of text technologies. News and social media, e-mail, surveys -- the gamut of text sources -- are full of subjective information: opinion, attitudes, emotion, and mood, with a wide variety of current and possible business uses. Application areas include customer satisfaction and support, marketing, financial markets, media and publishing, and politics and policy: essentially any computing application sourced from human communications.

Sentiment analysis represents a huge opportunity and it presents technical and solution challenges. That's why I've created a new conference, the Sentiment Analysis Symposium, slated for April 13 in New York.I'll cite material I created for the symposium Web site:

With the explosion in use of Facebook, Twitter, and blogging - of TripAdvisor, Yelp, and FlyerTalk - of on-line media and of e-mail, instant messaging, and surveys -- it is essential to hear the true Voice of the Customer (and the Market, Patient, and Employee)... and to be heard. Yet keeping up with the round-the-clock information torrent is impossible with old, manual methods. The ability to lead the competition -- in customer satisfaction and support, brand and reputation management, financial services, product design and marketing, and an array of other business processes -- depends on automated analysis of sentiment, mood, and opinion.
