CrossWorlds Adds E-Business Integration

Seeking a needed expansion of its business, CrossWorlds Software Inc. today extended its enterprise application integration tools to support interenterprise application links over the Internet.

CrossWorlds e-Business integrates Extensible Markup Language and electronic data interchange support technology from extranet software provider IPNet Solutions Inc. CrossWorlds will also develop its EAI Connectors for packaged Web-business applications, the first being online procurement apps from Commerce One Inc. Future plans call for Connectors to integrate SAP's B2B applications and products from Ariba Inc. and BroadVision Inc.

CrossWorlds and other enterprise application integration vendors have seen their business slow down recently after very fast initial growth, and analysts say the Internet is a good place to turn for a jump-start. "If you're going to do E-business, the first thing you need to do is integrate parts of your enterprise that have never been integrated before," says Joshua Greenbaum, principal with Enterprise Applications Consulting. "And when you talk about online trading communities, EAI vendors should do well in that because there's so much out there to be integrated."

CrossWorlds e-Business will put the company in direct competition with Extricity Software Inc., which changed its name from CrossRoute last year in part to avoid confusion between the two companies. Extricity's Alliance product for integrating applications of supply-chain partners over the Net has been sold mainly in the high-tech manufacturing industry to companies such as Adaptec, Solectron, and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing.

CrossWorlds e-Business will offer integration to two markets: virtual enterprises and extended enterprises. The former refers to connecting a host business with outsourcing partners, such as contract manufacturers; the latter refers to the entire supply chain of the host, its vendors, and its customers. The extended enterprise approach will utilize IPNet Solutions' software that enables XML and EDI transactions.
