Commerce One Trading Exchange Adds Second Logistics Provider

Real-time logistics is becoming even more of a focus at Commerce One.net, the trading exchange run by Commerce One Inc. The exchange says it's adding a second real-time global logistics provider--Logistics.com's Digital Transportation Marketplace--to the host of new business services being offered on the marketplace. The announcement highlights the growing importance of real-time logistics to customers of Commerce One.net. Global Logistics Technologies Inc. (G-Log) was the first logistics provider unveiled by Commerce One.net.

Tuesday's announcement comes on the heels of a statement last week that Commerce One.net had signed 41 new partners to provide members with a range of services, including financial, online conferencing, human resources, logistics services, and supplier-rating services. Commerce One.net VP Roy Satterthwaite says the addition of Logistics.com to other recently disclosed services expands the suite of tools that let Commerce One.net customers do end-to-end transactions on the trading exchange--from procurement through delivery.

Gartner Group analyst Lora Cecere says the addition of real-time logistics services to Commerce One.net shows that Commerce One's customers want to go beyond simple auctions to more-complex transactions in which the total cost of a product are known in advance--including purchase price, shipping, and fees and tariffs.

The addition of financial, online-conferencing, and supplier ratings services sets the stage for Commerce One.net's customers to use the exchange for more strategic procurement of parts and materials used directly in the manufacture of finished products. Commerce One and SAP are developing a procurement application intended for the complex and sometimes negotiation-laden work of procuring strategic materials.
