OVH.com is first Power-based cloud. Also, the last?
IBM would like to create a future for the Power8 and its successors in the cloud, but buildiers of 300,000-server cloud data centers hate chip architecture uncertainty. Power8 is a superior server chip that is now undermined by the uncertainty over its future. IBM announced today that it hand off chip facilities and production to GlobalFoundries and pay the firm to continue production over the next three years. That latter piece of the deal raises questions that neither IBM nor GlobalFoundries seem willing to answer at this time. What happens once GlobalFoundries runs through its three years of IBM subsidy? Will OVH.com be the first Power-based cloud? Also the last?
