Amazon Cloud Luster Fading? Look Closer

Some skeptics say Amazon's cloud dominance wears thin. I say Amazon's destiny in the cloud is in its own hands -- and you can't say that for IBM, Google, or Microsoft.

@Jeff J,

True. I guess it's even more overhead having someone follow who's out for you when you're the big gun.

One thing about being a big target is that companies start to create a strategy to beat you.  Interesting read from CNBC today. cnbc(dot)com/id/101757805

pcharles09 - This reminds a bit of the stories we have all heard from the Wal-Mart.  The potential vendor does the pitch gets picked up and then the pain begins.  Fast forward and ask them if they would do it again, many times the answer is no.  For every one entity that can survive affluence there are 100 who can overcome than adversity.

@Jeff J,

Amazon's issue is that their margins are already paper thin & only make it on volume. But as those margins continue to thin out, problems will arise, especially with shareholders.

Re: Good line but not great on line
@ pcharles09 - Certainly stocks can be manipulated to make money and that does happen.  Large cap is harder to do and to be honest I think there are deeper issues with Amazon.  you can only squeeze until the well runs dry and I think the are getting to some very dry dirt.

@Jeff J,

As I've come to learn recently, stock price is not a very good indicator of a company's health. It's outside (sometimes's inside) folks' manipulation of the shares to make money.

Searching for Google in the cloud
Many well-informed observers say Google could supply real competition to Amazon Web Services. But I can't get a sense that Google has enough insight and outreach to business users to do it. Startups love it and that's a great use for Compute Engine/App Engine. But Microsoft, IBM and Amazon -- especially the latter -- seem to have a lock on the business customers, with VMware, Bluelock, Rackspace, others picking up their share.
