Cisco Systems Inc. today introduced a slew of multimedia equipment additions and feature enhancements to its Catalyst line of switches.
First up in Cisco's latest round of multilayer switch upgrades are two new lines of multigigabit enterprise switches the company says have both the speed and intelligence to integrate voice, video, and data. The Catalyst 6000 and 6500 series promise a throughput of up to 150 million packets per second and extensive quality of service, security, and policy networking functions. Both the 6000 and 6500 series come in six- or nine-slot versions. Pricing for switches in the 6000 series starts at $18,985; there was no pricing available for the 6500 line.
Cisco is also adding voice and IP telephony support to its Catalyst 5000 and Catalyst 5500 series. Cisco says new ASIC-based hardware and intelligent software will supply the quality-of-service capabilities needed to deliver advanced voice applications through both LANs and WANs. Specifically, Cisco is adding voice-enabled ASICs to its NetFlow FeatureCard so the equipment can recognize, classify, and then prioritize traffic. Catalyst system software, the NetFlow Feature Card II, and Cisco IP telephony software are available immediately.
