Don't Sweat The Silly Stuff

One of the side effects of running any publication is that PR people love to pitch you stories about things their clients are convinced are important. Sometimes they are, of course, but often they're about nonsense like office clutter and pet sitting.

One of the side effects of running any publication is that PR people love to pitch you stories about things their clients are convinced are important. Sometimes they are, of course, but often they're about nonsense like office clutter and pet sitting. No, I'm not kidding. This week already I've gotten press releases on both subjects.

CableOrganizer.com actually did a survey concluding that "two-thirds of respondents (66%) concede that their mother would not be proud of the way they keep their work space most of the time." But here's the kicker: the company tied the state of the office to employees state of mind: 64% of respondents said their emotional state in the office is closely tied to the condition of their work space."

On the down side, 50% blamed paper and files for the clutter, while only 8% cited cables and wiring. Still, that didn't stop CableOrganizer.com!

But why stop at the office? The missive I got from FETCH! Pet Care claims that forward-thinking companies are "now offering professional in-home pet sitting and dog walking services as part of their employee benefits package." (Remember, I said I wasn't kidding.) So if your small to midsize company wants to compete for talent with the likes of Fox/Newscorp, PeopleSoft, and Pixar, forget offering health insurance and instead volunteer to swing by your office manager's house and take Fido for a walk every afternoon.

It's easy -- and amusing -- to make fun of press releases like these. But hey, they work. I wrote about 'em, didn't I?
