Dell's New Storage Array Gets Small -- And Green

Dell's 2.5-inch storage array for small businesess is intended to combine power efficiency and performance.

Dell's 2.5-inch storage array for small businesess is intended to combine power efficiency and performance.According to InformationWeek, the PowerVault MD1120 is Dell's first storage expansion enclosure built with 2.5-inch drives. Apparently, the smaller drives deliver better performance than the more-commonly used 3.5-inch drives, and new 300GB 2.5-inch drives make them feasible for devices like the MD1120.

Dell, meanwhile, adds that the drives cut power consumption by up to 50% compared to larger drives -- and cut space requirements by up to 70%.

The direct-attached storage device is targeted at small companies running a few business applications such as databases, online transaction processing, and e-mail storage. When paired with Dell's PowerEdge RAID Controller, the PowerVault MD1120 can hold six enclosures with up to 144 drives.

The MD1120 is available "immediately" the company says, and InformationWeek says it will cost about $10,000 for an average 20-drive system.
