With version 3.1 of its multimedia softphone, CounterPath has improved its UI, supports conference calling and multiple accounts, and added compatibility with more telephony infrastructure equipment.Bria -- available for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux -- is an IP-based softphone that allows you to make phone calls, send and receive high-definition video, hold instant messaging sessions, and transfer files via your desktop computer. Based on your address book, the interface lets you place and manage calls within a familiar-looking window.

The new version (for Windows and Mac) improves the interface to make it easier to switch functions; for example, you can initiate a phone call from the IM window or send a message during a phone call. Similarly, the new interface also makes it easier to manage multiple calls going on at the same time

As for features, Bria 3.1 supports server-based conference calling, as well as multiple accounts. A user can use one account for voice calls and another for video calls, for example. It also adds call management options, such as more efficient conferencing and call transfer. The new version also adds support for more PBX systems and other infrastructure equipment from Alcatel-Lucent, Avaya, Cisco, NEC, and other vendors. "Bria 3.1 proves that small and medium businesses…don't have to compromise on call quality, video quality or usability when choosing to take advantage of all of the bottom-line benefits that multimedia softphones provide," according to Counterpath vice president Todd Carothers.

Bria 3.1 will be available some time this month at $50/copy. Existing Bria 3.0 users will be upgraded for free.
