Application vendor BroadVision Inc. today disclosed plans to team with Bank of America, Hewlett-Packard, and travel reservation company Amadeus Global Travel to create a new company to provide employee portal services.
The new company, which has yet to be named, will provide a range of services, including training, benefits, financial and travel services, industry news, stock quotes, and E-commerce, through a hosted internal Web site. "If we can be that unifying bar or dashboard to consolidate content and provide self-service access to applications, then the market opportunity has no end," says Jaime Ellertson, BroadVision's executive VP and general manager, worldwide strategy office.
BroadVision and BofA will be the primary investors in the new company, and each of the member companies will contribute employees and technology. Each company has also signed on to use the new company's portal services when they become available in 60 to 90 days, Ellertson says.
BofA will provide human-resources and employee benefits services and will be the primary provider of banking and financial services offered through subscribers' sites. BroadVision will provide the portal software, as well as maintenance and support services, while HP will be the primary supplier of hardware infrastructure products and services. Amadeus, a Spanish travel reservation company, will offer online travel services, which are the second-most-popular service offered through employee portals, after financial services, Ellertson says.
"What this new company will do is provide an IT manager the way to outsource building and running an enterprise portal to an [application service provider], run by companies with some track record and good software," says David Folger, senior program director with Meta Group.
General availability of the portal services is not expected until year's end.
