The beleaguered supplier of lithium-ion batteries said it's working out the details of a global replacement program with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.

Hit with a series of recalls for its lithium ion cell batteries, Sony Corp. said Thursday that it will initiate a global replacement program to deal with the problem.
Sony said it is discussing the replacement plan with the US Consumer Product Safety Commission and will announce details of the program soon.
As Sony announced discussions for the replacement plan the day after IBM and Lenovo announced recalled another batch of rechargeable lithium-ion batteries made by Sony.
In its statement Thursday, Sony said it has been supporting the recall of the suspect battery packs marketed by Dell and Apple.
Sony said it will consult with its OEMs that use the batteries.
"We believe that this (replacement) program is in the best interests of both our customers and all consumers," Sony said.
