Brief: Popularity Of Online Classified Ad Sites Growing

One in five U.S. online consumers visit the sites, a 47% increase over the same period last year.

More than one in five U.S. Internet users in July visited a classified ads Web site, a market research firm said Tuesday.

The number of visitors to such sites grew by 47 percent from the same month a year ago to 37.4 million, ComScore Networks said. Traffic to Craigslist, the category leader, soared 99 percent to 13.8 million visitors.

Second was Trader Publishing Co. with 10.2 million visitors, up 15 percent from a year ago, while AutoTrader ranked third with 6.4 million visitors, an increase of 14 percent. Rounding out the top five were, 4.5 million visitors; and, 2.9 million.

Classified ad sites are growing at a rate surpassing most other categories, ComScore said.

"While online classifieds are not new, it appears that Internet users are really beginning to catch on to this phenomenon," Andrew Lipsman, ComScore senior analyst, said in a statement.

Demographically, people between the ages of 25 to 34, and online consumers in households making at least $100,000 a year were each 23 percent more likely to visit a classified ads site than the average Internet user. People living in the Pacific region were 29 percent more likely.
