Brief: Google Brings Back 'Maps' Brand

Saying it "underestimated" how much consumers like the name, the company has reinstated "Google Maps" and is now dropping "Google Local."

Google Inc. on Friday said it has brought back the name "Google Maps," which the company dropped in October.

The Mountain View, Calif., company dropped the name in favor of "Google Local," after combining its local search engine with its street mapping tool. The company, however, said it "underestimated how much people loved Google Maps."

"Many have continued to refer to the site by the previous name, and many have explicitly asked us to 'bring back Google Maps,'" the company said in its blog.

Besides getting street maps and driving directions for places in U.S. cities, the tool also provides search for local businesses. The latter is also embedded in other Google products, including its search service for mobile phones.
