Blade Thrust From Dell

Dell Computer has launched its PowerEdge 1655MC blade server, which holds up to six dual Pentium III processor blades in a 5.25-inch-high chassis. The 1655MC with chassis, two processors, two drives, and 512 Mbytes of memory will be priced about $3,700, slightly less than similar products from Hewlett-Packard and IBM; however, IBM's BladeCenter has more-powerful Intel Xeon chips. Although all the major vendors boast blades, says IDC analyst Mark Melenovsky, the market won't take off until next year, when companies get a chance to test the next generation of technology.
