Big Storage Offered In A Small Package

The best storage systems used to come in the biggest packages. But one of the big-box vendors is building a small system that offers much of the same reliability, availability, and serviceability once found only in big systems. Hitachi Data Systems' 9910, the latest model in its Freedom Storage Lightning 9900 line of heterogeneous storage systems, will move data quickly because it comes with the same Hi-Star internal network switched architecture that its bigger cousins have.

While midsize companies will appreciate the size and the price, big companies will be able to use the 9910 for large single jobs such as data marts, data replication, and application testing. The system will ship in January and will be priced between $170,000 and $900,000, based on configuration. It will store up to 3.5 terabytes of data, work with information from a storage area network or network attached storage, and let administrators move data in multiple ways without disrupting system operation.

The Clipper Group analyst Mike Kahn says the 9910 will be attractive to IT executives and to resellers that want to offer two lines of products. "For many customers, this is the size system they need, with new high-end capabilities," Kahn says. "Some good things have happened with EMC taking over Clariion [the midrange storage system leader], but some of the resellers only have a single source of procurement, and HDS will solve that for them now."
