Sybase Inc. Monday debuted a package of database software for capturing and disseminating real-time data. The suite, which includes a new release of Sybase's core database software, eliminates delays caused by batch and polling data-management processes.

Sybase Real-Time Data Services captures data "events" or changes in a data set, such as a large deposit into a bank account, and immediately propagates that information to a messaging system such as IBM's WebSphere MQ, Tibco Software Inc.'s Rendezvous, or any vendor's Java Message Service system.

The direct database-to-messaging link means that critical information can immediately be passed on to people or applications that need to take action on it. Real-time links also help to audit data changes for security or regulatory purposes, and for collecting event-driven data for a real-time consolidated view of information in multiple data sources.

Changes to information in a database are now typically passed along using batch processing or periodic polling techniques that can delay transmission by seconds, minutes, or hours. Real-time systems, where they exist, are often custom-developed systems, according to Sybase.

The new Sybase offering is based on Sybase Adaptive Server Enterprise 12.5.2, a new release of Sybase's database that also offers support for 64-bit Linux, Smart SQL caching which improves application performance, improved security, and improved support for Web services. Sybase Real-Time Data Services also includes Sybase Replication Server for data capture and replication, Sybase RepConnector for linking Replication Server to messaging systems, and a JMS message bus.

Sybase Real-Time Data Services will be available in May and priced starting at $29,995 per CPU. Sybase ASE 12.5.2 also will be available in May and priced starting at $1,495.
