The entire Bay Area tech press corps seems to be here at Google this morning for an event the company is calling "Searchology." No less than five professional video cameras, plus the odd consumer camcorder, have been trained on the front of the room, where two video screens display "Search ] ology" above a bar of the blue, red, yellow, and green that most everyone now associates with Google.
Elliot Schrage, VP of global communications and public affairs is scheduled to speak shortly, followed by Craig Silverstein, Google's technology director, Ben Gomes , software engineer, and Kerry Rodden, senior user experience researcher.After a short break, the program resumes with Udi Manber, VP of engineering, Marissa Mayer, VP of search products & user experience, and Alan Eustace, SVP of engineering and research.
As usual, Google has spared no expense with the catering, having set out an appetizing array of fruit and pastries for breakfast. (And you wonder why Google gets so much coverage.)
The Google schwag is different from yesterday (when I was here attending a B2B Google event). Everyone has been given a notepad with one of those images that changes depending on the angle from which you view it. The picture alternates between Google Earth's globe and an aerial view of the Google campus. There's also a clear plastic pen shaped like a rocket. It is filled with blue liquid for no obvious reason.
