The company will operate as a separate division, with existing staff working to expand the collaboration app's features.

Salesforce.com on Tuesday acquired Manymoon, developer of a free and premium social productivity tool.

The company, co-founded in 2008 by Amit Kulkarni and Manav Monga, offers its app on Google Apps Marketplace, LinkedIn, and Google Chrome Web Store, and more than 50,000 businesses have adopted the tool, according to Manymoon.

"Over 1,000 new businesses choose Manymoon each week to track any type of work activity with anyone from anywhere," the company said, in a blog on Tuesday. Manymoon will operate as a separate business within Salesforce.com, and its team will remain intact, continuing to focus on the unit's social app, according to the blog. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Although Manymoon is not alone in the social productivity space, its acquisition by Salesforce.com could separate the company from some of its smaller competitors such as Hiveminder, Remember the Milk, ToDoist, Dooster, and Toodledo.

"Manymoon Standard, our free product, will continue to be available for existing and new customers. In fact, we'll continue to add features to our free product. And, if you want to upgrade, you are welcome to do that through the Manymoon Web site whenever you like," Manymoon said. " Manymoon will continue to work with Google Apps Marketplace, LinkedIn, and the Chrome Web Store. And, we will continue to develop new features to enhance support of these platforms."

Businesses continue to discover the developer's app on Google's Apps Marketplace.

"We use Manymoon for almost everything. Assigning tasks, general project management, and time reports. The integration with Google Apps makes us love it even more. We're a small, six-person company that's working all the time and working not in the office. It's extremely helpful for our productivity," wrote customer Raymond Rouf in an online review posted Tuesday.

As Manymoon grew, the company realized serving customers required more than developing an application that required no training or setup, that met users' productivity needs, and tapped new technologies such as HTML 5, the company said. Ongoing success demanded scalability, security, performance, and support, which the Salesforce.com acquisition will provide to Manymoon, it noted.

"Over the last 12 years Salesforce.com has been an evangelist and driver for bringing applications, platforms, and collaboration to the cloud," Manymoon said. "We're excited to be part of their vision for cloud, social, and mobile, utilize their knowledge and experience to build a world-class social productivity app, and move even faster in delivering new capabilities to you. We are going to invest more in what you've told us you like about Manymoon: Google Apps Marketplace, LinkedIn, and Chrome Web Store support. You can expect to see many of the key social productivity features you've requested released in the near future."

At least one customer requested that Manymoon's near future includes apps for the mobile world. "I hope this means that you'll really put time into developing mobile apps. We'd love to have iOS and Android apps that function well even offline," said a blog commentator identified as Joy.
