re: Microsoft: Free Office 365 For Students
I agree. Apple has been pretty successful getting its products onto college campuses, and some of the fruits are clear; Forrester analysts have told me, for instance, that "OS X vs. Windows" has become a job recruiting issue for many top young college and professional school grads. Clearly the phenomenon is limited (otherwise, OS X's enterprise market share in the last year would have grown more than the ~1% it has). But it still shows why Microsoft should be concerned with education-- especially now that iPads and iWork (or Android and Google Docs/ Quickoffice) have found their way into so many student workflows.
With Student Advantage, though, Microsoft's making a fairly aggressive move to keep Office front and center in the next generation's consciousness. Office has always been the best product, but with no-cost "good enough" alternatives on the market, it has still lost share. But now that Office will be free to so many students, why wouldn't they use it?
