Cognos, FileNet Strike BI And Process Management Pact

The firms say they will provide jointly developed templates that provide a framework for deploying their tools.

Software companies Cognos and FileNet struck a deal to jointly market their flagship technology platforms to customers seeking to more closely integrate their business intelligence and business process management (BPM) efforts.

The two companies said this week they will market templates they developed together that provide a framework for jointly deploying their tools. Cognos will lend its Cognos 8 business intelligence software to the pact, while FileNet provides its FileNet P8 BPM application.

Defined simply, BI involves the gathering, analysis and reporting of business data. BPM is the design and execution of workflows that help companies carry out specific operational processes.

The two vendors hope to provide intelligence on business processes -- aggregating process data from FileNet with enterprise data from Cognos 8. Customers will also be able to incorporate business intelligence data into steps within FileNet processes.

The arrangement also means that Cognos 8's business event management capabilities, which include monitoring, detection and alerting functions, will be loadable into the process steps within FileNet P8, the firms said.

Cognos began heralding the ability of Cognos 8 to work more closely with BPM technology from FileNet, EMC, IBM and Savvion when it debuted the BI platform in September.
