Cognos Among Companies Named To BPM Standards Group

The BI vendor joins up with an organization that has tried to bring structure to the concept of business performance management.

Cognos was among seven new members named to the BPM Standards Group, bringing a major business intelligence software vendor within the fold of an organization that has tried to bring structure to the concept of business performance management.

The BPM Standards Group said Tuesday that Cognos -- which sells what it calls "corporate performance management" software -- joined the organization's ranks, along with Cartesis, Deloitte, Geac Computer, OutlookSoft, PricewaterhouseCoopers and Unisys.

Cartesis, Geac Computer and OutlookSoft are business performance management vendors, Deloitte and PricewaterhouseCoopers are accounting firms, and Unisys is an IT consultancy.

In a prepared statement, the BPM Standards Group said "several additional organizations" have expressed interest in reviewing early output from its working committees and contributing to future initiatives.

In March, the group defined BPM as a set of integrated, closed-loop management and analytic processes that address financial and operational activities. Confusion has surrounded business performance management, which has gone by several, vendor-based definitions.

Existing members of the BPM Standards Group include Applix, Hyperion, IBM, SAP and the Data Warehousing Institute. Research firm Meta Group, also a member, says sales of BPM-related applications reached $1.1 billion last year.
