Apple on Friday acknowledged receiving complaints about the latest iMac freezing up during normal use, and said it would issue a fix as soon as possible.
An Apple spokesman said customers told the company that software update 1.1 issued Sept. 13 sometimes caused their new iMacs to stop working. The update was issued to fix bugs, and was recommended for 20- and 24-inch iMac models with 2.0, 2.4, or 2.8-GHz processors.
The problem affected a "small number of iMac users," the spokesman said, declining to give exact numbers. "We are tracking down the root cause of this, and will issue a software update to correct it as soon as we can. Most likely later this month," the spokesman said. "We apologize for the inconvenience."
While Apple reported hearing customer complaints following the update, iMac users reported having problems with the new iMacs in August, the same month they were released. One person on Apple's online discussion forum for the iMac reported his machine freezing up Aug. 22, four days after receiving it. "I have tried force quit but nothing seems to help and in the end have to restart my iMac. I have also done clean install but it still keeps freezing up," the person wrote.
Some people on the forum reported the iMac freezing when opening other applications, such as iTunes, FrontRow, and iPhoto. One person reported his machine freezing when he tried to launch a game. "I decided to switch to Mac after seeing the pretty new package and now have buyers remorse," the person said. "I bought the extended AppleCare product and cannot figure out how the heck to get help with my freezing iMac. Although I mostly want to work on my computer, occasionally I want to plop the kids in front of a game and not have to troubleshoot a freeze."
Apple chief executive Steve Jobs introduced the redesigned iMac in August, along with new versions of its iLife and iWork software suites. The machines are encased in aluminum and glass for easier recycling.
