Amazon: Office 2007 To Ship In January

Amazon's pre-order listings for various Office 2007 editions indicate that the software will be released Jan. 30, 2007, the same day the online retailer has slated for Windows Vista's availability.

Almost missed in the disclosure of Windows Vista prices Tuesday by Amazon.com was another nugget of information: the giant e-tailer is betting Office 2007 will ship on Jan. 30, 2007.

Although Microsoft unveiled pricing for the next upgrade to its Office application suite months ago, it has been coy about a definite release date. This summer, in fact, it announced it was pushing back the suite's general availability to an unspecified period in "early 2007."

Amazon's pre-order listings for various Office 2007 editions, including Home and Student ($149) and Professional ($499) indicate that the software will release Jan. 30, 2007, the same day the online retailer has slated for Windows Vista's availability.

Amazon spokesperson Sean Sundwall said Tuesday that the release dates were Amazon's best estimates, based on conversations with Microsoft and others in the technology industry.

Also on Tuesday, Microsoft refused to confirm Amazon's Vista pricing or the Jan. 30 release dates.

"It is still too premature for us to comment on the final pricing for Windows Vista," a spokesperson wrote in an e-mail response to TechWeb. "We plan to announce Windows Vista U.S. pricing when we ship Windows Vista RC1, sometime later this quarter."

"We are [also] not providing specific guidance on the availability date. The exact delivery date will be subject to achieving quality metrics based on customer feedback."

Most analysts expect that Microsoft will unveil Windows Vista and Office 2007 simultaneously.
