Akamai To Acquire Nine Systems To Boost Its Rich Media Offerings

The deal, valued at nearly $160 million, will beef-up Akamai's ability to publish video, audio, and other rich media to the Web.

Akamai Technologies plans to acquire rich-media provider Nine Systems for almost $160 million in a deal that will beef-up Akamai's ability to publish video, audio, and other rich media to the Web.

Akamai, which operates a global network of servers that speed content across the Internet, said it expects the deal to close by the end of the year.

"The combined Akamai and Nine Systems rich-media framework will allow us to develop the best solutions to help our customers simplify the control, management, distribution, reporting, and monetization of digital assets on the Internet," said Paul Sagan, president and CEO of Akamai, in a statement.

According to Monday's announcement of the pending acquisition, Akamai plans to integrate Nine Systems' Stream OS into its existing network of servers. The Nine Systems family of configurable media management tools are designed to enable users to easily produce and post content online.

Troy Snyder, president and CEO of Nine Systems, said his firm's current customers use its software to provide content in music, broadcast, sports, entertainment, inspirational, advertising, educational, and government markets.
