You're right, Sarah. Enterprise Data Management, for most enterprises, is an cultural change. Historically, business units have had exclusive rights to their data and some are quite unwilling to share. In many cases it is not the technology that they resist, but the loss of power that comes with being the SME, the one-and-only expert about a particular type of data in an organization, and they fear that if they relinquish the information about the data (metadata) and allow others access to it, they could lose more than that power, they could lose their jobs. This is ridiculous for the most part. If you are a contributing member of the enterprise, they will keep you around. But the larger issue is how the culture of data, as an asset, and as such it must be managed, understood, inventoried, defined, made available to all with appropriate security and privacy considerations in mind. And as all cultural changes, it has to be introduced to employees in such a way that they understand their valuable contribution to the data pipeline. And how their jobs will change, not disappear, when Data Management (big D and M) is implemented.
