Salesforce Launches Tool for Building Custom Interfaces

Salesforce.com is making good on its platform-as-a-service promise with the introduction of a tool that lets developers build custom user interfaces for their Salesforce apps.Visualforce enables users to reassemble and combine prebuilt UI components for any application developed on Force.com, which is what Salesforce is calling its platform-as-a-service business line. The resulting applications can be deployed through a standard Web browser or on a mobile device.

Bigger picture, the offering is part of CEO Marc Benioff's strategy for Salesforce to go beyond its CRM roots and become a major force in the world of cloud computing. In doing so, he puts his company in direct competition with the likes of Microsoft and Amazon.CNET News, Mashable
