Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, the international Internet-naming watchdog organization, last week warned that the Internet's domain name system may be more susceptible to a denial-of-service attack than previously thought--especially the 13 root servers that help convert domain numeric addresses to legible names.

But while Gartner security analyst John Pescatore says hackers could target the system to be flooded with thousands of bogus requests and potentially make the Internet unusable, he doesn't think the harm would last long: "Most likely the attack would be thwarted in a matter of minutes or hours."
